We spent about 15 hours, in 2 days, and about 600 miles, riding in and around the Allegheny National Forest area in Pennsylvania. Many of the roads here are supreme. But some are not. The Allegheny River runs along the roadways, as well as th
e Susquehanna River. Both rides were amazing, temperatures were in the mid to low 70s with sunny skies. We stayed at the Microtel Inn in Clarion PA. (https://goo.gl/maps/WwAvD4c2zBx). This served as our starting point each day.
On the 1st day, we rode from Clarion and spent the day running a loop around and thru the Allegheny National Forest. The ride is the planned ride: https://goo.gl/maps/dT1Rn8yn2g52
Local guides suggested riding the county road 666. We rode this road, but found it more appropriate for campers and non-touring riders. We found the best roads to ride were the county roads 948 and 949. The others were really good. But these two roads offered smooth surfaces, perfect grades and curves for fun riding.
On the second day, we targeted roads 120 and 144 to ride. We’d use the back roads, north of US 80, to get to Weedville to find the county road 555. Our original plans were to ride the Quehanna Highway, since a local guide suggested it. Once we got to the road, we found it similar to the 666 of the day before, and decided to return to the 555 only about 5 miles in. That turned out to be the best decision of the day. We discovered the 555, the 120 and the 144 roads to be one of the best rides of the entire journey this year and probably rank right up there with the Natchez Trace ride we did earlier. Here’s the map: https://goo.gl/maps/sCsDniXETK52 of the ride for day 2.
We didn’t have enough time to ride the 120 between Emporium and Driftwood, but I’m sure it’s just as amazing as the length from Driftwood (555) to Renovo. The country road 144 was an incredible ride as well. Given more time, this is the route I’d take on a second opportunity to ride up to Emporium and take in much more of the 120 and the 144 by looping up to Galeton PA.
